How to design an Airbnb that guests love, recommend, and return to year after year

Designing a successful Airbnb is about far more than good looks. It’s about creating an experience that feels thoughtful, comfortable, and memorable. With years of hands-on experience, from our family-run Airbnb business to staying in countless short-term rentals myself, I have learned what truly makes an Airbnb stand out.

My parents didn’t just design a beautiful wooden lodge in the mountains; they created an experience. Every detail was intentional, regularly improved, and focused on how guests would feel during their stay. Coming from a family that traveled extensively, we learned first-hand how important it is to stay in a place that feels welcoming, practical, cozy, and easy to navigate.

Today, I help Airbnb owners in Southern Sweden design interiors that are attractive, easy to maintain, and deeply connected to their location. Below, I’m sharing the key principles I use when designing Airbnb interiors that guests love, recommend, and return to again and again.

Analyze the area

Start with understanding why guests choose your location. Some reasons may seem obvious, such as proximity to the coast, forests, or countryside, but dig deeper.

Ask yourself:

What activities bring people here?
Is it hiking, cycling, golfing, or simply slowing down?
Are your guests couples, families with children, active travelers, or retirees?

Create a clear guest profile. Think the way your ideal visitor thinks. When you understand who they are and why they come, every design decision becomes easier and more precise.

Create an experience

The most memorable Airbnbs offer something beyond accommodation.

In my family’s Airbnb, guests were invited to pick berries, fruit, and flowers from the garden. For many children, it was their first time experiencing this. These moments stay with people.

Your experience doesn’t have to be elaborate. It could be:

A picnic set
Bikes or sports equipment suited to the area
A simple outdoor seating area designed for slow mornings

Offer something guests wouldn’t normally do at home. That’s how you create memories.

Create a Thoughtful Welcome Book

Arriving in a new place can feel overwhelming. A well-prepared welcome book improves the guest experience immediately.

Include:

Wi-Fi details
Safety and emergency information
Appliance instructions
Local recommendations for coffee, restaurants, nature spots, and shops

Guests don’t want stacks of tourist brochures. They want your personal recommendations—the places locals actually love. This creates a sense of belonging and makes guests feel cared for from the moment they arrive.

Create a Mood Board or Concept Board

Once you understand the area, the experience, and your guest profile, translate this into a clear interior concept.

Your Airbnb interior should feel local and authentic:

Reflect the surrounding nature
Respect local architecture and traditions
Use materials, colors, and textures that belong to the place

A mood board helps you stay focused so that furniture, lighting, textiles, and colors all work together as one cohesive story.

Choose the Right Materials

Low maintenance doesn’t mean low quality. Choose materials that are:

Easy to clean
Durable
Pleasant to touch

Recommendations:

High-quality white bed linen that launders well and feels crisp
Seasonal blankets (lighter for summer, warmer tones for winter)
Soft towels, carpets, and textiles
Sofas with removable, washable covers

Everything guests touch is part of the experience. Comfort and cleanliness should always be intentional.

Plan the Lighting Carefully

Lighting is one of the most overlooked elements in Airbnb design—and one of the most important.

Avoid relying on a single ceiling light. Instead:

Add reading lights by beds and sofas
Create soft, layered lighting for evenings
Use warm white bulbs and dimmers where possible

Stay overnight in your own Airbnb and experience it as a guest, especially in the evening. Cozy, well-planned lighting makes a huge difference in how welcoming a space feels.

Add Meaningful Details

Details give your Airbnb character.

Consider:

Local art, ceramics, or craftsmanship
Books about the area or its activities
Cookbooks featuring local produce and food culture

Supporting local creators not only adds authenticity but also connects your guests more deeply to the place they’re visiting.

Create a Feeling of Freshness

Cleanliness is expected—but freshness is remembered.

Freshness comes from:

Light, balanced color palettes
Well-ventilated spaces
Clean-smelling textiles and mattresses
Thoughtful furniture layout that feels open and calm

Vintage furniture is welcome, but make sure it smells fresh and feels well cared for. Replace old lampshades, refresh interiors, and maintain mattresses and pillows—even if guests never see what’s inside.

Design with Intention

A successful Airbnb is designed with care, intention, and respect for both guests and location. When done right, your Airbnb becomes more than a place to sleep—it becomes a destination in itself.
